Combating Imposter Syndrome for New Leaders

Imposter Syndrome: a term that’s become increasingly familiar, especially among new leaders. While taking on leadership roles can be exhilarating, it can also unearth feelings of doubt and inadequacy. Here’s an exploration of imposter syndrome and actionable steps to overcome it.

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter Syndrome refers to the internal experience of believing you’re not as competent as others perceive you to be. Despite external evidence of accomplishments, those experiencing it remain convinced they’re frauds and don’t deserve the success they’ve achieved.

The Numbers Tell a Story

  • According to a review article in the International Journal of Behavioral Science, an estimated 70% of people experience imposter feelings at some point in their lives.
  • Studies have shown that imposter syndrome is prevalent among both men and women, although it can manifest differently.

Battling Imposter Syndrome:

  1. Acknowledge and Talk About It: Recognize the feelings without judging yourself. Talk to mentors, peers, or a coach. Often, merely verbalizing these feelings can diminish their impact.
  2. Separate Feelings from Fact: Just because you may feel incompetent doesn’t mean you are. List out your achievements and qualifications whenever you’re overwhelmed by feelings of fraudulence.
  3. Accept Perfection Isn’t Achievable: It’s natural to make mistakes. Instead of striving for perfection, aim for excellence and continuous learning.
  4. Redefine Failure: Start viewing mistakes as opportunities to learn. Understand that every leader, even the most seasoned ones, has faced failures and challenges.
  5. Celebrate Your Achievements: Don’t shy away from celebrating your successes, big or small. It reinforces self-belief and confidence.
  6. Seek Mentorship: Having a mentor can provide an external perspective on your skills and achievements, helping you see yourself in a more realistic light.
